Choosing One Of The Small Dog Breeds

Small dog breeds are becoming popular choices especially for people who live in the city. This is because small dogs are better at living in small apartments and places. Small dogs also cost less making them popular companions for small families or for single individuals. There are many small dog breeds. Some popular breeds include the French bulldog, Shih Tzu, Yorkshire Terrier and the Pug to name a few. With so many choices, how do you know which kind of dog to get? Here are some tips when it comes to choosing a small dog breed.

Size

Very small dogs are usually 10 inches in height and around weigh below 15 pounds. These very small dogs require less exercise than small dogs and make good companions. Many of them are referred to as lap dogs or tea cup dogs because of their very small size. This dog is ideal for people with small children, those who live in closet sized apartments and people who are away for more than 40 hours per week.

Small dogs on the other hand are a bit bigger than the dog described above at 9-15 inches in height and weigh over 15 pounds but below 35. Like small dogs these dogs are ideal for apartment dwellers, busy people and families with young kids

Grooming

Grooming can affect your small dog choice. Some dogs have long coats while others have short. Generally speaking, those with long coats need more grooming time compared to short haired dogs. Grooming requires brushing, bathing and giving them haircuts. If you don't have time to groom your dog at least once a week, consider getting a short haired small dog like Pugs and French Bulldogs. Those who have grooming time can consider the Havanese or the English Toy Spaniel.

Health Issues

It also pays to be aware of potential health issues of small dogs. Some dogs are more prone to diseases than the rest. The dachshund for example is prone to respiratory problems while poodles are prone to pancreatitis. The Chihuahua, one of the small dog breeds with pointed ears is full of energy but is susceptible to tracheal collapse and bone and joint diseases. Owning a pet is a lifetime commitment and being aware of potential health problems will help owners handle veterinary bills.

Level Of Activity

There are small dog breeds that are playful and require a lot of attention. There are also breeds that are content to loll around and do nothing. Be realistic when it comes to exercise. Consider how much exercise you will be able to give your pet. Some small dog breeds that are happy to laze around include the Norwich and Norfolk Terriers, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi and the Affenpinscher.

Lastly consider dog breeds that are good with small kids if you happen to have a family. There are dogs that consider themselves to be the "baby" of the family and might not take well to being eclipsed in attention by small children. The best small dog breeds for families are the Boston Terrier, Bichon Frise and the Beagle.
